Government Case Study
U.S. Census Bureau
With assistance from NISH, BTCO became the prime contractor providing
imaging services to the US Census Bureau to convert more than 600
million digital images from the 2000 census to a microfilm format
for long-term storage.
Through this contract, BTCO managed the largest microfilming operation
in the world and BTCO’s infrastructure management style demonstrated
Javits-Wagner-O’Day Program capacity in the performance of large-scale
operations. The project was hosted and managed at BTCO’s
Wichita, Kansas, location.
As the prime contractor, BTCO converted census documents from electronic
TIFF files to roll microfilm for long-term archival storage. In
addition, Service Source of Alexandria, Va., Imaging Solutions Company
of Wichita, Kansas, and Affiliated Computer Services, Inc., of Lexington,
Kentucky, provided the necessary technical support. BTCO used
16 Kodak Document Archive Writers within a Title 13 secure facility,
to convert about 12 million electronic images to microfilm each month.
The BTCO team completed the requirements of the Census contract 18
months ahead of schedule.
